A Community Stands Together

Tonight, The Winery at Wolf Creek sees the return of its much-beloved Yappy Hours. On Saturday, for The Market Path, it's their first First Saturday event in months.

And I would like to say more about those two events, to truly celebrate our members' abilities to move forward and to express the importance of safely supporting our local businesses, but there is another important topic that must be addressed.

Simply put, a community stands together.

That is a community’s main purpose – to celebrate achievements or to lend support whenever and wherever necessary both for the individual and for the greater good.

And because it's just plain the right thing to do. Because we all have a heart, a soul, and a hand to lend.

The main purpose of The Loop has been to strengthen our community by strengthening support for local businesses and community organizations. But to not take a moment today to recognize that a portion of our community is hurting would be unconscionable.

There is great strength, after all, in recognizing a problem, facing it, and doing the difficult work to change it. There can be no doubt that racism is an ongoing problem in our country and so in a community such as ours, one that prides itself on its diversity, no matter how idyllic of a community we may believe it to be, it would be naive to say that racism stops at our borders.

The Loop stands with the peaceful protesters and vehemently denounces racism and the hateful actions it manifests. I have no doubt that there is more I can learn, more I can do in support, but that is the heart, the soul, and the hand I have to lend for now.

My eyes and ears remain open.
