Michele Makros Weitzel, Apiarist and Artist, moved to Copley, Ohio in 1987. From day one, her goal to create a 3-D landscape painting out of 2.5 acres of abandoned pasture thicket remained a top priority. This endeavor took nearly thirty years in juxtaposition with a demanding career as an art director and management executive in the advertising agency business. Along the way, she developed a reverence for pollinator habitat and established an apiary in her “Garden of Eden.” Summit County Master Gardeners recognized this achievement when they chose Weitzel’s Whimseys Apiary & Gardens as their patron garden for the 2014 Tour of Gardens of Distinction.
In retirement, Michele turned her artistic talent and energy toward creating whimsical pieces of functional artwork for the garden out of recycled materials. She renovated one of her outbuildings and opened a country store to sell honey, honeybee products and garden art.
Michele has also written a book, Love Letters from the Marine Wolf, dedicated to her parents and all the men and women who built, crewed or were transported aboard the USAT Marine Wolf, a US hospital and transport ship. The book is set to be released in the Spring of 2019.
To make a long story short, an old adage comes to mind: busy as a bee!
